Lake Pamvotis
Known also as Ioannina Lake, it has an area of 19.16sq km with a depth of 11m. Overflowing waters rush into swallow-holes running through subterranean canals into the Kalamas and Arachthos rivers. In the old days, waters entering the swallow-hole in the location of Protopapa formed Lake Lapsista farther north from Lake Pamvotis. This wetland of marshy places with an area of 35sq km has been made into cultivation land. Many forms of aquatic life inhabit Lake Pamvotis; it is the natural habitat of crawfish, carp and wild ducks. Regrettably, the creation of the alluvial flats of former Lake Lapsista resulted in the extinction of species peculiar to this area, notably the eels. Recent development works may have far-reaching consequences for the natural environment and the fishing trade in the region. Yet Lake Pamvotis lives up to its claim of being Ioannina's famous landmark closely associated with various aspects of community life: social occasions and sporting and leisure activities.

From this location you can see as well the mountainside of Mitsikeli with my homeland village ***Ligiades***. The village is built at an altitude of 970 meters above sea level. Ligiades is part of the region of Zagori. The distance from Ioannina is just a 15 minutes drive, only 12 km. far.
