Photographer’s Note
The gorge of Vikos is one of the most important sights in Zagori and the Prefecture of Ioannina. It is considered to be one of the best in the world. The gorge is located in Zagori between the villages Tsepelovo and Kleidonia (Konitsa). The villages Kapesovo, Koukouli, Kipi, Vradeto, Monodendri, Aristi, etc. are also near the gorge.
In the bottom of the 12 km gorge of Vikos, Voidomatis river flows slowly. The maximum height of its walls is 1100 m, while the maximum width is about 200 m. Another big ravine, Megas Lakos, joins Vikos gorge approximately in its middle.
The flora of the region includes rare herbs, many of them with medical merits. Furthermore, the gorge hosts 5 unique species of plants that grow only in this region, nowhere else in the world!
The fauna includes many rare species (ring ouzels, dippers, golden eagles, booted eagles, black woodpeckers, etc.) The region is also the natural habitat of the wild boar, the wild ibex, the deer, the wildcat, the bear e.t.c. That's why it is a National Park since 1973. The Vikos gorge is the core of the Vikos - Aoos National Park.
You can enjoy the spectacular view to the deepest gorge in the world (according to Guinness Book of Records) from Oxia (location in Monodendri), Beloi (location near Vradeto) and from the village Vikos.
Some travellers go down to the ravine from many villages of Zagori. There are marked footpaths crossing the gorge along the river. The 6 hours route in the ravine is absolutely breathtaking.
