Photographer’s Note
Hello dears,
Today we are in Lasithi prefecture and a lovely village Tzermiado, where there is a chance to see lots of Greek windmills - quite different than all these you can see in Holland or Poland...What was the most strange, they are using to pump water from the ground.
Hope you will like it;)
Enjoy coming weekend!
--------------------------------------
Tzermiado - at a distance of 49 kilometers far from Aghios Nicolaos at the West and some 60 kilometers Southeastern to Herklion, within the Lassithi plateau, between its eastern and western entrances. It counts some 750 permanent residents, it is the capital of the province of Lassithi and the seat of the Municipality of Lassithi Plateau; several public services, banks and an old people’s home established and cared for by the Holy Monastery of Petra are available in the village.
The name of the village is owed to the first settlers in the period of the Venetian domination. In the whole area in and around Germiado, there have been found vessels dated to the Middle Minoan period, potsherds, Roman coins and bronze items. The number and the variety of the finds show that the area has been inhabited at least as early as the Minoan period.
The whole area of the Lassithi plateau is being continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period up to now; Neolithic burials have been detected at the sites of “Skafidi” and “Kastellos”. Traces of human activity in the Neolithic have also been found in the cave of Trapeza (or Cronion), close to the village of Farsado. This cave, apart from the speleological interest (it has nice stalactites and stalagmites), seems to have also been used for burials and as a ritual place. A good number of finds have been brought to light here, as gold items, statuettes of faience and ivory, the most important of them being the Egyptian scarabs, dated to the 11 th Dynasty, which confirm the exchange between Egypt and Crete. The place has been abandoned later and the ritual activities have been transferred to Idaeon Andron.

Hello Mik,
A lively shot, with good, natural colours. The figure of the man between the sails of the windmill adds life and interest. This old form of power is going to be more and more important in the future!
Best wishes....Maggie

Hi Mik,
I've never seen a Greek windmill with the sails intact, although I have seen several with the masts, it is nice to see how one works. Fascinating note as well.

Hi Mik,
beautiful capture; in former years there should have been a lot more of them on that place, it should have looked like flowers on a carpet there..

Hej, Pamiętam te wiatraki z Lasithi. Fajnie wygląda na tle nieba. Ciekawem czy by jeszcze dał rade cos wypompowac. Szkoda, ze teraz sa elektryczne pompy zamioast tych malowniczych wiatraków. Pozdrawiam

Hi Mik,
An unusual windmill, a clever and very nice compo - I like how the tree on the BG gives an extra visual balance and the way the man in famed by the sales. Great colours and clarity also.
I don't find so strange that they use it for pumping water. As far as I know, most of the Dutch windmills do the the same and there are also those characteristic metal windmills of the EU Far West, which, incidentally are also very common in Portugal and Spain, although stupidly most of them aren't used anymore because they were replaced by electric pumps.
Regards, José.

hey you two :)
really smart framing in this photo, I like a lot how you have included the man in the gap between the sails. he seems to be unproportionately small compared to the windmill, that immediately makes me think about Don Quixote :) the light looks a little harsh, but that's a minor point, I like the photo as it is :)
