Agios Nikolaos revisited Photo

Photographer’s Note

Back to Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi Prefecture, after 1 year and some moths. Always enchanted by its beauty and especially that of the "key" spot, the place with the small bridge, where the sea, the Gulf of Mirabello meets the small "bottomless" lake Voulismeni.

"Agios Nikolaos (or Aghios Nikolaos, Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a coastal town on the Greek island of Crete, lying east of the island's capital Heraklion, north of the town of Ierapetra and west of the town of Sitia. In the year 2000, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, which takes in part of the surrounding villages, claimed around 19,000 inhabitants. The town is the capital of the nomos (province) of Lasithi, and sits partially upon the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara.

HISTORY
Agios Nikolaos was settled in the late Bronze Age by Dorian occupants of Lato, at a time when the security of the Lato hillfort became a lesser concern and access to the harbour at Agios Nikolaos became sufficiently attractive.[3]

The name Agios Nikolaos means Saint Nicholas, and its stress lies on the third syllable of the word "Nikolaos". Agios Nikolaos or Ayios Nikolaos (alternative transliterations of the Greek Άγιος Νικόλαος) is observably a common placename in Greece and Cyprus, since Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors and of all of Greece

MODERN AGIOS NIKOLAOS
Agios Nikolaos is probably best known as a tourist town that serves as a hub to the twenty or so small villages and farms that make up that part of Lassithi. Tourist attractions include the small lagoon Lake Voulismeni, small beaches in the town, the tiny island Agioi Pantes, the archaeological museum, the local flora exhibition “Iris” and numerous fairs. Tourism is mainly west European with Greek tourism concentrating in mid August. The lagoon features a small park with a trail, traditional fishing boats, ducks, pigeons, an amphitheatre and many cafès."

Very good blue hour timing.
Great colors. Good composition.
However if possible I would rather take less sky and include more of the reflections.
Amazing place.

Greetings Hercules.
Another really marvellous 'blue hour' photo from your camera. Wow, what a magnificent location. This town looks wonderful, surrounded by water and joined by the little bridge. This kind of shot always makes me want to jump right into the photo and the people enjoying their summer evening. The long tripod exposure has made this image sharp and the exposure is just right. Beautiful blue and pinkish tones to please the eye.

This is a fantastic blue hour shot! The town seems to be suspended in a sea of blue. The blending of artificial and natural works well here to create a wonderful scene. Your composition and POV are great with the waterway leading the eye into the scene. The photo has excellent color with fine sharpness and DOF.

Ηρακλή μου, εσένα έπρεπε να σε πληρώνουν για να ανεβάζεις τις φωτογραφίες σου στο site. Έψαξα και ξαναβρήκα την παλιότερη φωτό σου από το ίδιο μέρος 'Shining Agios Nikolaos'. Αυτή είναι σαφώς καλύτερη. Το αστείο είναι ότι (την ώρα που γράφω) αυτή εδώ έχει ακριβώς τους μισούς βαθμούς από εκείνη. Μάλλον έχεις ανεβάσει πολύ τον πήχη.

There's life exhaling all over this photo, not only near the water line but everywhere it seems to flow. Don't know if it's due to the look of the city itself but I seem to get energy from the photo, don't ask me why but i do.
Once again the reflections, the hour you took it, te typical Greek architecture present all over the photo al conveys to this great photo.

¿La diferencia?
La composición (con el plano más cerrado) y sobretodo una luz mucho más "fina" que le da un toque a la foto más que acertado.
