Shining Agios Nikolaos, a photo from Lasithi, Crete

Photographer's Note

Well, with this one I close (for now) the small "Cretan Nights- Old Venetian Ports (not always) at the Blue Hour" serie. This is not an old Venetian Port, this is the "key" spot of Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi Prefecture (that's where my hometown, Ierapetra is). This is the point where the small lake (well, at least it once was a lake and the legend had it that it was bottomless, until some British admiral measured its depth at 64m - still pretty deep for such a small lake) meets the Gulf of Mirabello. If you want to have a wider view of the town and the lake and read some more information, just check my last year's post, Bottomless.

*DRI Method used, no Neat Image available again (unfortunately).

Great "blue hour" shot with good light and nice lights in the cityExcellent POV and good diagonal built by the roofs in the distance.These bars or restaurants at the harbour must be great place to finish a wonderful day.I can nearly smell the delicious seafood.....

I see a lot of fine places to dine out. Fish restaurants? This one might be the best of your evening Crete series because of the colors. Taken at an earlier hour, I find the color palette richer here. Very well done.

Perfect exposure in this, with the lights just right to bring out the colour. Your timing was good too, with the sky still a little blue, making the shot more interesting when you have a mix of the natural and artificial light. Excellent work!

Hercules, this is even better than the other one, I love this. It is not only pretty and very well executed it is so alive. You can just hear the bar tenders and waiters chatting waiting for ht rush of evening diners. Very well captured.

Very nice composition on this back harbour, the twilight time is better than nights shots.
May I suggest you in this case to take your picture with a -1/3 exposure ?
Personnally I make my self several tests for my nigt picture.

I like much the superb management of the luminosity which is at the same time soft and bright the reflections are of any beauty. I just read a novel by a turkish-greek writer, Cretan origin, and the hero of the novel is from Hanya and studies high school in Agios Nikolaos (around 40ies)..I remembered I have seen a photo here as described by the book (a bridge makes Agios Nikolaos look like it has 2 seas)..I dont know if it is this bridge but still it was exciting to see your photo again :)..
