Photographer’s Note

Agios Nikolaos, a small town of about 8.000 habitants, is the capital of the Lasithiou Prefecture in Crete. It has been for the past three decades one of the "hot spots" of tourism in the island. Agios Nikolaos lies 36 km to the north of my hometown, Ierapetra.

Its "highlight" is the lake that you see in the picture, which a local legend says it's bottomless, while others say that it's "connected" with the volcano of Santorini. The legend started when at the end of WW2, while the Nazis were leaving Crete, they threw all their tanks in the lake, and since then noone has seen any sign of them. Meanwhile, some British admiral measured its depth at 64m - still pretty deep for such a small lake. Since the 50's (i think, i am not sure) the lake is connected with the Mirabello bay, through a small passage, (i hope that you can see the tiny bridge on the upper part of the photo-if you want to have a better look at the "key spot" of the town ***CHECK HERE***) and it's used as a harbour for small fishboats.
