Photographer’s Note

Samaria Gorge in Eastern Crete.

This picture I made on a hike through the famous Samaria Gorge in the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) in 2006.

The flowers are wild Oleander (Nerium oleander) can be seen all over the path along the almost dry river bed of the Samaria river. It is very hot here in summer. It is recommended to start the hike early in the morning (around 7) in the high mountains of Omalia and then reach the sea at noon. In between there is the old settlement of samaria, and at the end of the track Agia roumeli, a small, beautiful (and car-free) village with a ferry port awaits the hiker.
