Photographer's Note

Spetses is a small island , nationally renowned mainly for its valuable assistance in the Sanctuary and National Rebirth battle.
Understandably the Greek hιstory highlights the accomplishments on land and sea and the Greek literature ' praises ' its lush hills and idyllic beaches. But the history of this island is not only in the starting years of the Revolution.
If we go back for centuries to discern faint traces of life that in time become more evident.
According to archaeological findings , the island was inhabited from the Early Helladic period ie around 2300 BC Due to its geographical position in the bay of Argolis and its sources, the island was used as a refueling station for ships headed for the terse Argive shore . Next to the findings of the early Helladic, are other times of the Mycenaean period , and then the first Byzantine centuries .
In the Frankish period (1200-1460) Spetses was subject to the Venetians which succeeded the Turks . Large colonization waves in the 15th century, the period when there were significant facilities of christiano Balkan families ( Albanians ) to the south and mixing with local populations . Spetses in antiquity was called Pitoussa which means pine trees . This name was used for 3,000 years until the early Byzantine centuries . The current name was given by the Venetians , who named it ISOLA DE SPEZZIE because of the many natural herbs growing here.
Today, Spetses is the favorite destination of all yachts and sailing boats and a very laid back destination for the rich and famous cosmopolitan visitors from around the world and this picture is showing its main harbor.
