Standing at the left side of Monastiraki metro station (to survey the square, the side street and one of the fruit stalls) I took this picture because I found the gentleman in the foreground interesting and wanted to test myself, whether I'd able to do it from a very close vantage point.
I decided to turn the picture into black and white because his face wasn't visible and also because the details were so many and confusing. I wanted to place emphasis on the tight row of shadows on the pavement and worked a lot in post processing, I'm not sure to what effect.
I made three attempts to capture this scene, this is the first one. On the third, he turned and looked at me in an inquisitive way. I pretended I was photographing the church (or something), then turned my camera in the other direction and then quietly left...
Thank you for visiting

I had to smile when reading the last sentence of your note. That happens to me all the time, that I have to pretend I was taking pictures of something far away. It may have been a good decision to make this in B&W. The shadows you describe, but also the curving pattern of the tiles and the shapes of the old church are more important than the colours that were lost. This is an excellent street-photo combining human activity of various kinds with architecture into a pleasant urban atmosphere.

Most elderly people would give you an inquisitive look if taken by camera, Ourania.
Yet, I find the effort taken was well paid-off.
Marvelous and vibrant scene on the street, church's dome is most noatbe - and good exuse to what you where aiming too.
The B&W format works well with the strong light conditions.
Well done picture.

Hello Ourania - I love the note that accompanies this shot as you outline quite clearly your thinking whilst taking this shot and your decision making when processing. That's both helpful and interesting and I agree that colour would have been busy and distracting. In B&W the architecture and curving lines of the pavement work as a framework against which the figures are projected and there is harmony and balance in the composition.

As soon as I saw the pavement, I recognized this are from one of your previous pictures. Teaming with activity, this is a picture that could probably tell a lot of stories. A good test to take, and might I say...mission accomplished! :) Perhaps the technical details weren't to your liking, but the final result has a lot of appeal. I'm sure most of us, if not all, have experienced the same thing while trying to be inconspicuous when taking pictures involving people...you just never know what type of reaction you'll run in to.
The gentleman in the immediate foreground is classic...his "captains" hat, white beard and striped shirt look quintessentially Greek to me. Now, the shadows are obviously a moment frozen in time, so they're without movement and make for a stellar pattern of their own...but I clearly see them dancing to the beat as this group of people converse and move about with one another. A fun scene all the way around. Keep on testing yourself, the grades are good! :) Enjoy the new day. All the best.

Lovely composition with excellent framing and exposure. The conversion to monochrome has given a very good documentary feel to this picture. The people in the foreground: those sitting by the wayside and the young lady walking down provide life and dynamism with the patterns on the road leading to the lovely old building with the tiled roof.
Excellent street photograph.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice day.

Hello Ourania. An interesting photo with many details. Very good reproduction of the gray values and handling of light. Well seen and presented, - informative text.

It seems from your note you worked hard for this. It was worth the effort since it is a well judged and balanced composition. You wanted to emphasise the shadows and they are there for all to see but the line of white paving tiles takes my eye through the shot and creates the depth more than the shadows.
Black and white was a good choice though since it also allows the tiles to appear as a pattern and texture more than it would in colour I guess. the old guy in the FG anchors the shot too and my eye keeps coming back to him having travelled through the shot.
Thanks and have a good evening

A great place for people watching and plenty of photos to make as they provide attractive visual aspect and they welcome attention so by adding these characterful people to the scene, photograph gives it own story to be formed in viewers' mind as a lot is going on in the crowd and the lovely strong shadows cast. It is a fascinating feature of our daily urban lives but also because it is entertaining experience as well. Perspective and depth is great, it's competently exposed and nicely captured, Congrats.

I love your note, describing what is in your mind when you intend to take a street photography. Of course the old captain is really THE subject, but the snaking people shadows are following the pavement curves, the old person main work is to look at the pedestrians. The church closes the image, but you could have cropped it in order to get a square format focused on the street life.
All the best, and congratulations for your humanism vision

Hola Ourania querida
You made me laugh reading the note about way to capture people, my idea is, when I have time, to compose without focusing at the person, then wait if they were not looking at me , advance and click
Good idea, it works well , the mix of good architecture and people with the path going to the back
Well seen and composed

One of the many "photo things" I regret not having done in Athens is not having explored this lively square of which we see so many great photos like this one. I like the successful way you managed to get a great daily life shot that is also a great compo, graphics and architecture wise while avoiding that all that people, that give much life to the image, introduced a visual chaos.
TFS, regards, José.

Hi my dear friend Ourania
A good shot of people. Smart choice of black. Your courage in recording the documentary images of daily life that I admired. Very well. Text is sweet and lovely.
