The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis. It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and turned into a ruin by the Heruli in 267 AD. Source: Wikipedia

Spectacular shot of this renovated/rebuilt amphitheatre. I like the contrast between the sunlit foreground and the blue clouded city beyond. Very nice.

Good Morning Gosia,
I have often said that it can be difficult to make ancient ruins look interesting to people who have not had the emotional experience of 'being there'. However, this shot of yours breaks that premise. Your viewpoint, with its curved seating, immediately draws us into the scene. The light is glorious, as if the Odeon is under a spotlight, where we can secretly enjoy it, against the b/g of the uninvited city.
Have a lovely Sunday,
snunney (104877) 2014-01-12 2:15
The well chosen point of view shows us the graceful curves of the amphitheatre and sets in the context of the modern city. The light is very agreeable and the colours also. Very good sharpness throughout.
ikeharel (76297) 2014-01-12 2:18
Only a third of the half-crescent amphiteatre presented here - but a marvelous perspective over the ancient remains of the edifice with the city cover the background.
A fine combined modern renovation and old built structure, all under good light and clarity.

Ciao e buona domenica

Well, I know this place. Very familiar theatre, but I did take a photos from opposite side. I like the last settings of the Trekearth, when we can see the big pictures. Well done. Attractive view, useful note. Thanks for memories!

Hello Gosia - Thanks to the light you have a super contrast between the colours of the theatre and the view of Athens beyond. The shot puts the odeon into the context of the surrounds and I like that. A super look at a wonderfully restored ancient site. Have a lovely Sunday. Rosemary

Super kolory i dobrze rozegrane swiatlo.

nice the view of this section from the Odeon of Herodes Atticus with the backdrop a part of Athens.
Beautiful presentation with the tight frame to creates a charmy optical effect in the scene.
jacquest (19045) 2014-01-12 14:13
The framing is very well done and ypour POV shows an amazing view of the Odeon and the city. I like the graphic effect of the stairs in a fantail pattern. The light is well managed with sharp details.

macjake (71113) 2014-01-12 22:51
as you already know, i've viewed your shots on FB, and they're all wonderful shots...I like the graffiti one's too...its a side of Athens we don't get too see too often.
It looks like the seating is brand new, it may take away some of the charm, but also adds alot too.
Athens looks so large in the bg!
nice shot as always
abmdsudi (57168) 2014-01-13 9:55
Extremely impressive structures shot so much to admire and its history to illustrate this theatre. Like your shooting angle and the impressive viewpoint with bags subtle details and depth with interesting bg. I think you have befitted from quality light & shadows and rich colours. A striking shot with some other interests around to complement this capture so smoothly. A shot beyond reproach, Congrats and TFS

Witaj dear Gosia
Such an amazing structure and I love your choice of the vertical frame, enhancing the curves and allowing the to splay out of the right foreground corner. Stunning colours and you did a great job with the difficult light in the sky.
williewhistler (16412) 2014-01-16 11:40
the graphical shapes of this iconic building are beautifully portrayed in its environment against the distant city.
The light has been very well controlled.
Best regards Les.

i like the p.o.v. you have chosen with the theatre in fg and the city in bg.
good sharpness and colors.
ourania (49961) 2014-01-18 10:07
this is one of the most beautiful and one of my favourite places in Athens. The theatre is magnificent and offers great photo opportunities any time of the day. It's one of the most important and busiest locations of the Athens Festival and during summer evenings one can enjoy marvelous performances there. Your point of view is original and wonderful. You've made superb use of perspective, captured the character of the odeon and included a stunning background. Colours, textures, light and shadows are exquisite. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
patpatch (1601) 2014-01-24 4:29

wow, what a shot! Incredible POV. We are lucky to see this view. Even those who used to enjoy live programmes in this stadium, couldn't see such view through the window :)
Great composition with outstanding depth. Superb clarity and light. Excellent shot from your gallery. Tfs.
