Discobolus, a photo from Attiki, Attica

Photographer's Note

Going to the Panathinaiko Stadium to watch the delivery of the Olympic flame coming from the ancient Olympia to the city of London,for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, will take place in London, England, United Kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012,one can see a lot of statues and one of them is Discobolus made by Konstantinos Dimitriadis.

Konstantinos Dimitriadis (Κωνσταντίνος Δημητριάδης) (1881–1943) sculptur and academic.

Participated in 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, not in a sports event but in sculpture after the program of the competitions included artistic competitions.
His work the diskobolos won the gold medal. This project is currently in New York and copy is located in Athens, opposite the Panathenaic Stadium.

Hi Danos,

A rather unusal post from you but indeed a very good one. The vertical format is of course perfect and I could really see how you worked hard with the composition and POV. I really enjoy the way the the head of the thrower and the discus is pointing to the upper left corner and how you have hidden the top of the tree behind the statue. The colourful sky is a perfect backdrop. TFS and have a nice evening!

You're capturing well the statue of the Discobolus by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see a discus thrower's brawny image. The whole is harmonized well by this statue, streetlights and the sky dyed to sunset. And, the green leaves at left sude give an additional good effect.

A great use of light. A well presented crop allows eyes to remain fixed on the athlete. This is a really excellent photo, and is a good example of art photography. The blue sky tones in the BG are beautiful and your composition with the contrasting light the athlete silhouette works so well. Very nice!

What a vision and mood, photography as an art, this has got to be one. The wonderful golden atmosphere almost throughout except for the contrasting blueish-grey sky while the athletic statue is very dominating and well framed at low pov, as main subject of interest. This is very creative shot, adding some life and you have created a good atmosphere of the evening, a strong quality shot remembering the Games. Well done, Congrats :))

However, I always think that the true beauty of a great sculpture is seen when the monument is captured in a great way, like you have done here. This is a wonderful backlit shot of the discobolus. Perfect stature of the sportsman represented. The sunset sky in the background displays magnificent colours.
Nice reference to the past Olympics.
Just a little fault : The street lamp needs straightening, but it doesn'taffect the quality of the picture.
