Photographer’s Note

In the most romantic part of the Moselle Valley, where the river curves between two hiking paradises - Eifel and Hunsrück - lies the old town of Cochem.
Even the Romans sang the praises of this remarkable landscape. It is true - a few things have changed since then, but the attraction has remained because the past centuries - above all the Middle Ages - have left their marks here.
The magnificent Reichsburg, the big castle, situated on a precipitous rock high above the town, dominates the landscape. The many delicate pointed towers, battlements and oriels give the impression of a typical fairy tale castle, particularly as it is one of the few castles in Germany, which was rebuilt in its original style after its complete destruction.
As impressive as the castle itself is the view of the Moselle Valley with its beautiful forests, meadows, fields and vineyards, as well as the old part of the town.
The town of Cochem itself is a sight worth seeing, not only because of its narrow streets and twisty alleys, the lovingly restored half timbered houses with the typical slate roofs, the historical market-place, but also because of its medieval town gates, churches and walls. The wine-growers and restaurant owners would also like to take the time to introduce you to the variety of their excellent Riesling wines.
You can enjoy another facet of the town walking along the Mosel promenade which is decorated with flowers and where many benches invite you to a quiet break.
A further attraction is a river tour on one of the Moselle boats, either during the day or at night with music and dancing, when the lights of the castle and the town are reflected in the water.
Have fun and relax in the only indoor swimming pool with artificial waves in this area.
It is a wonderfully situated leisure centre between meadows and vine-yards and offers all the luxury of a modern swimming pool in fine and bad weather.

Yes, I know, it’s not Asia or Nordt America, or another fantastic photographic countries. But what do you think about Germany, well people it’s a beautiful country and I was last week on the Mosel and ofcoarse I took a few shots there. I hope you like it the shot I made from the city of Cochem and his marvelous castle.. Germany is beautiful for a landscape photographer, thats a fact for me.

The atmosphere that the sky is provided is just incredible, and the castle adds a mysterious ambiance.

Fantastic and dynamic composition here, Jaap, the PP is also nice in revealing the details, although the whites on the boat seem a bit irreal. The reds are great, on the other hand, very festive shot.

Hi Jaap,

For some reason, you have changed the colour of the boat with bad airbrush and it doesn't work out. Because the colour is flat, it doesn't look real. Also, the reflection in the water is white, so there's no way the boat can be grey.

Other than that, I recognize your style easily, even if you are in Germany... :-P) Great landscape under photogenic weather conditions.

Wow, this is a real stunner of a shot! The quality is excellent, with the level of detail in the hills and castle really making it seem like we are there. I like the fact that we can see the clouds so well, since they are often so much brighter that there are no details visible, unlike with your shot. Excellent work!

Hallo Jaap,

Zie dat je weer terug bent, hopelijk een leuke trip gemaakt. Het is zeker geen ver weg locatie, maar ook dichterbij kun je mooie platen maken wat je hier mooi laat zien. Mooie hoe je scheepvaart en rivier hebt laten opgaan in het landschap.

Dat vreemde kader is niet meteen mijn keus, maar ala, detail.

Ik heb wat foto's van je gemist tijdens mijn eigen vakantie en als ik kijk naar je vorige dan zit daar ook iets vreemds in wat ik hier ook zie. Die brug daar en de boot hier zijn niet natuurlijk wit, alsof je iets geverfd hebt met een brush of iets dergelijks. Geen idee wat je gedaan hebt, maar staat niet zo fraai.

Wat wel zeeeeeer fraai is dat je een mooie 17-40 in handen hebt, da's echt een juweeltje.

Dag, Jaap. Een zeer zorgvuldig samengestelde foto. De boot op de voorgrond wijst naar het kasteel op de heuvel en beide staan op zeer goede plaatsen in het beeld. Het kasteel komt zeer goed uit op de mooie lucht. Zeer aangenaam landschap om naar te kijken.

Romantic is a so appropriate word to such a view...
It's gorgeous and I bet that the superb compo of yours has much to do with it. It's so tidy, so well balanced...
The colours and clarity are great. I find the sharpness and light a little bit strange, but on the "good sense", as the effect is enchanting.
Maybe the only thing less great is that the white boat appears as light grey and maybe that also shows in the clouds. I guess that it resulted from avoiding OE.

This is a nice shot of the Reichsburg Castle and the little town of Cochem. I spent a day in Cochem this past summer and really enjoyed it regardless of the fact that it rained for most of the day.
Your composition is fine using the river to lead the eye into the shot. The riverboat gives the shot a sense of direction and motion. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and DOF. The sky with its heavy clouds and spots of blue provides a great backdrop for the castle.

Eventjes bij onze ooster buren, en meteen een prachtig shot.
Alles erop en eraan, de rivier met boot, het dorp langhs de waterkant, en als top of the bild het kasteel op de top, gestructureerd met een mooie wolkenlucht.
Hier drie weken later en de herfst kleuren zouden eruit sringen, maar dan is men er meetal niet meer.
Maar zoals deze is ook zeker in orde. Bedankt,

Away from your usual stamping ground for this fine composition, which, nevertheless, bears your unmistakable hallmark. I like the diagonal positioning of the steamer which makes a good lead-line towards the castle on the hilltop. Excellent light and colours and very good clarity.
