[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the side isle of the church of st Maria im Kapitol. One of the many Ottonian/Romanesque churches in the city of Cologne and one of the most interesting. The first church here was built in the 7th century, on the location of a Roman temple complex dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. The current building was started in the 11th century and is the first to feature the tri-leaf clover style, where the transept arms end in a semi-circular apse, similar to the choir. Originally it featured a westwork with three towers, but these collapsed in the 17th century. Of course this building was redecorated by the allied airforce during WW2 along with the rest of the city, but like all of the Ottonian churches, it was faithfully reconstructed. Like most of these buildings the interior contains a number of objects that are of interest to those interested in ancient art. In this case (amongst other objects) a richly sculpted romanesque door (also featured in this photograph), a renaissance rood screen and an unusually shaped crusifix from 1304 CE.
