Photographer’s Note

This is one of the towers in the course of the old city wall of Olpe, a city of about 26.000 inhabitants, situated in southern Westphalia - about 80 km east of Cologne.

Olpe was first mentioned in a deed of 1220 and it received its town charter in 1331. The fortified city wall was built about 1373. Today only some hundred meters still are preserved. In my picture you can see the so called "Hexenturm" (witch-tower), built in the 14th century and today it is the oldest still existing secular building of Olpe.
It possibly was the prison in conjunction with the witch trials of the 16th and 17th century. The last witch trial in Olpe took place in 1696.

Hello Frank,
A good composition of this tower; I like the juxtaposition with the domed lamp post on one side and the pollarded tree on the other. Good light, colours and clarity.

j'aime beaucoup la lumière qui vient frapper cette tour. La couleur de la pierre ressort bien. Un bon choix de cadrage, pas facile pourtant, qui permet d'éviter que la tour ne soit cachée soit par l'arbre, soit par le lampadaire.

Splendid photo of this interesting place. Maybe the lamp is a little bit disturbing, but it is detail, only.

Türmchen und Baum gegen den herrlich blauen Himmel, sehr gut platziert mit einem warmen Kontrast. Das Licht spielt gut auf dem Hexenturm und lässt das Mauerwerk gut erkennen.

hi frank..good setting here for mid foreground and distant well integrated...the tower and the landscape
the little lamp post snuck in though to take some of the tower's attention

Magnifique cette tour, qui ressort a merveille devant ce beau ciel bleuchinchini!
J’aime aussi bien le lampadaire sur la gauche et cet arbre envahi par le lierre, qui donne un bon équilibre a la composition!

Toller Bildaufbau,mit Lampe,dem dominierenden Turm und dem mit Efeu bewachsenen Baum in einer Reihe.
Ich glaube genau den gleichen blauen Himmel hatte ich am 16.12.in Kambodscha auch....

This is nice - I like the tower and the vegetation covered tree to the right. The lamp post doesn't seem to add much to the image so a slight change in pov might have been able to eliminate it - just a thought. well seen and TFS. Gerald

Hi Frank. Nice scene with the tower bathed by the sun. Also the shadow of the tree on the building gives it extra quality. I like the dark shadow of the wall on the right and the houses peeking over the wall. Their white shapes fit the scene beautifully. Greetings from a warm to hot Melbourne. 26 or so is just nice. Poor witches. I read a books about this trials in Nurenberg and other places and always had a feeling that something like this was repeated much, much later. And not only in Germany, oh no.

der Baum und die Laterne sind gute Begleiter des Turms, der so stolz, der vergehenden Zeit trotzend steht. Die Landschaft da unten bleibt für die nächsten Jahhunderte gut gewehrt.
