This was how Checkpoint Charlie looked like, when the Berlin Wall was still there. We drove by car, my husband and I (honeymoon in Eastern Europe to Istanbul and Greece with a little tent, and heavy raining all the time until we reached the Turkish border! And the marriage survived this purgatory!)
The most difficult thing was to find the entrance to West Berlin. All the signs showed us Berlin Hauptstadt der DDR. And we could not go that direction by ourselves, had only transit visa through east Germany. Finally we found a road without signs, and that was the entrance to west Berlin. It was late and rainy and the two camping sites were full, so we had to put up our little tent on a parking place. I was afraid someone should back over us with his car, by mistake, in the darkness and rain. But we survived....Scanned from an old dia slide. |
