| I'm not sure if this site has an official name or not, so I'm calling it the "River Memorial." I think the spot is along the Spree river. Basically, the white crosses in the photo commemorate persons who were killed attempting to cross the river from East to West Berlin during the Cold War. Trying to get to the west by swimming across the river was a common method defectors attempted when the Berlin Wall was still in use. According to our guide, very few actually made it. After the fall of East Berlin, relatives and friends erected these makeshift gravestones along the river in memory of those lost, trying to gain their freedom at all costs. Tragically, a number of people were shot and killed attempting the crossing only a few weeks before the Fall in 1989... I'll try to find some official information about the site, but that's the basic info. |
