"Then go and buy one" you say, you're right...

The Rathaus, or city hall, is a very impressive structure - erected in 1897 after the old one had burned down in 1842, this representative and dominant building symbolizes the wealth and pride of the Hamburg citizenry. By exchanging goods with the world, Hamburg had become one of the largest ports of its time, and the new, ornate city hall reflects the leading position of Hamburg at the time. Because of the swampy ground, 4000 oak tree poles had to be rammed in the ground to stabilize the building. The Rathaus is held in a mixture of styles that were popular at the time it was built - from renaissance to baroque and classic. Nevertheless, a tour through Hamburg's history and the many luxurious rooms and salons are definitely worth the € 1 admission fee.

With 647 rooms, the Hamburg Rathaus has more rooms than Buckingham Palace. The city hall is connected to the Hamburg Börse, or stock exchange, Germany's oldest stock exchange founded in 1558. The large space in front of the Rathaus was concepted like an Italian piazza, with markets and a large outdoor cinema during the summer that attracts thousands of people every day. The Rathaus also houses the administration of the city state - the parliament and the government or senate. Around the Rathaus, you can find most of Hamburg's high class shopping passages with countless designer stores.
