Photographer’s Note

This is the memorial to the servicemen who died during the Berlin Airlift which ran between june 1948 & september 1949. The memorial sits outside Tempelhof Airport in Berlin.

After World War 2 disputes between the Soviet Union & the other Allied Countries (UK, USA & France) caused a split within Germany and the division of Berlin itself. Surrounded by Soviet controlled territiory, West Berlin was effectively cut off & supplies had to be flown in to keep the city functioning. More information can be read about the airlift here and also in this U.S. Air Force article.

39 British & 31 U.S. pilots (and other personnel) lost their lives during the course of the airlift, and they are commemorated by this monument, known in German as the Luftbrückendenkmal and also known by Berliners as the Hungerharke or 'Hunger Rake'. It's three spikes represent the 3 air corridors used by the Western Allies to fly into the city.

Some information taken from the latest 'Lonely Planet' Berlin guidebook.
