Taken from the quite depressing Frankfurt Zoo. I think even the best of zoo's are quite cruel, so to see this one which had animals locked up in small concrete exhibits made me feel a bit sad for them. But I guess as long as tourists like me keep paying money to visit, then nothing will probably change.

This was one exhibit where the animals had no concrete walls surrounding them.

Re: title. I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but in Australia it's a very small tradition (and marketing gimmick) to put fake flamingoes at the front of somebodys house when it happens to be their birthday.

Hi Brendan,
Your photo is funny and weird at the same time... The balck/redish is excellent, but somehow the flamingo in focus seems to be less bright and stands out a bit less than the others. But it's well positioned, so I'd brighten it up a bit.
I agree with your remark on zoos and cruelty. A friend of mine tryed to free a kangaroo once... It was quite fun.
Never heard about the bday tradition.
Nicolas

Clever title an a very canny shot,Brendan, the way you totally blackned the background. selective focus also works a treat. I think it's a very telling package that resonates on different levels.
well done!
Francis

Fantastic, Brendan! Love THE WAY you shot these incredibly coloured pink flamingos, against a pitch black ground that just "pops" them, with a shallow dof that blurs some and emphasizes the other. Superb work, and a true note... i also hate zoos for that reason. In Budapest, there was a sociologist a while ago who RENTED a cage in the zoo for a few days, put up a board saying "Homo Sapiens" on it and sat behind the bars for all to see... He tried to protest the terrible fate of the poor animals.
BTW, here in Ottawa they do the same thing in suburbs with flamingos... which I find super cheesy of course...
take care,
sasa

Hello, Brendan--
Great work here, your exposure is spot-on, really saturating the colors of the flamingo against a black background that makes them pop. The shallow DOF is nice, as well as your choice of focused bird--placing it between the two that are facing each other holds attention there.
Thanks!
sam

Hi Brendan!
Good example for DOF school.Amazing colors and angle of view.
Regards!

Hi Brendan!
Nice attractive shot to go with your anti-advertising again. ( Like the McD one. ) I did like you and paid to go and see these flamingoes in that zoo. Shame on me!
I preferred the nice place they had in Parrots' jungle in Miami, where they had a vast park to walk about in, and a more appropriate climate to live in I suppose.
Interesting note and explanation of the title!
Cheers.
Marie louise.

Hi Brendan!!
Otivo efeito visual você obteve nesta composição. As cores e o corte do corpo das aves ficou dinâmico.

Thanks.
aznegrao.

Waouhhhh powerful contrast between this orange-pink and black.
Excellent choice of dof and this black baground make an impressive effect.
Different...I like.
A WS just for fun :)
