Photographer’s Note
My second entry to the Scavenger Hunt - April, 2004
2nd Category: An abandoned building
The little 6000 habitant village where I live is suffering from grit digging for over 30 years now, this is one of the old grit pits. Closed over 10 years ago. Just recently the company that is digging the grit announced that they need new digging areas as the old ones are almost empty. Our little elected government tells us we need the tax money from those new areas, everybody else says the future to be new areas are too close to our residential zones and it is destroying further nature. The company and the government are trying to appease us by telling us about wonderful renaturation of the digging areas !!!
Here we see an example. Is that wonderful nature again after 10 years ???
Also nobody knows what that abandoned building was there for.
Just sharing our little problems with you...

An interesting composition, Jan. I like the way the forest seems to be slowly engulfing the abandoned building. Nicely framed with the building tucked into the top corner.

I love the juxtaposition of the sombre colours of the wood and the bright colours of the dig, they ballance the shot very well.

Sad sight Jan but an interesting photo with good composition and lovely colours. Good luck with convincing your government that this doesn't qualify as renaturation or regeneration.

I like the clear lines in this photo. The pit area. The strip of grass at the edge of the trees and then the trees. It all seems clearly marked. And it really is sad that this is their attempt to correct years of error. It looks stripped and abandoned still. Very unattractive. And it has a sad feel to it in the end. All that torn up nature and the abandoned building adds to that. All forgotten. Good job capturing this.

Jan, a simple but very effective picture. I like the way how you composed the building. Well seen.

A very clear composition in this shot to enforce and accentuate the message you have written up in your note. Clear lines, and good colors and contrast, and a good idea to put the building into the upper left part of the frame. A fine entry for the scavenger hunt; well done, Jan.

A very interesting note, and a wonderful shot, Jan. I like the horizontal layers - the dark forest, the dry plants and the green ones, the layers of red soli and greaen areas. The abandoned house is nice. Very nice shot, Jan.

I'd decrease the level of blue by about 10% & increase contrast slightly. The trouble with globalization, & privatization etc, is that it's all about maximum profits & €/$/£. Quality of life & shelling out extra money for restoration doesn't enter into the equation, unfortunately, as illustrated by your photo.
