Cologne cathedral with its two spires 157 m. in height, has been the city's most famous landmark for centuries and the most well-known architectural monument in Germany.
It took 632 years until construction of the largest German cathedral was completed. After the laying of the foundations in the year 1248 and making rapid progress initially, construction work gradually came to a standstill. It was only with 19th century romantic enthusiasm for the Middle Ages and the commitment of the Prussian Court that construction work resumed in 1842. In 1880, completion of the cathedral was celebrated as a national event.
The main railwaystation of Cologne is right near to the cathedral, on the left side of the Rhin. The railwaybridge is also open to pass by feet, thatís one view of the cathedral from it.
This is my first contribution to the Scavenger Hunt - April 2004:
5. The tallest building in any particular city.
03.04.04 PS: it's not only about the cathedral, but also how relativ things are, depending from how one look.
The bridge seems to be so huge, that the tower of 157 m can almost hide behind.
But if one takes a better look...

Very strong graphics in this pic: a bold interplay between the intersecting lines. Due to the tight composition, the fair amount of astractness in the railway bridge, the spire of the cathedrale still manages to catch our attention. Well seen & very well done, Janos.

And how could I resist this when I have been making a living out of bridges for most of the last 20 years?
A fine close up on a heavy steel structure and you even reduced the cathedral to something very secondary. The signal adds some colorspots that are good for the picture. Maybe you could have crop a little less at the bottom.

What a beautiful shot of this bridge, a very good angle, (although your aim was the cathedral for the scavenger hunt), I think the bridge is great! I like the round lines, but also the way they go down. Very well seen!

Interesting collage this pix Janos where the strong construction of the bridge complete dominate the more famous background of the fine cathedral in cologne. Interesting

Excellent perspective Janos! I like the contrast created by this bridge where the straight beams contrasts with the curves of the bridge structure. The addition of the cathedral in background is a nice idea giving, I think, more importance to that bridge.
