Why is Oktoberfest (number 173 this year) called „Oktober"-fest when it actually begins in September?
The first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began on October 12, 1810 and ended on October 17th with a horse race. In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.
This year, before the last day (today Oct 3rd), 6,5 million visitors came to enjoy the Oktoberfest. All records will, for sure, be beaten.
Some figures from last year (all within 17 days):
6 million visitors
6,1 million Maß beer (1 Maß is roughly 1 litre)
95 Oxen eaten
….
Some other figures from last year
4000 objects brought to the “Lost Objects” office
1400 clothes
480 IDs
400 purses
350 Keys
330 handbags
260 pair of glasses
200 handys
200 Ombrellas
…

Hi Tony.
A nice picture. These pictures are always difficult but in this case, the exposure was well managed and the result was, obviously, lovely.
