Leaving Sweden southbound shortly before noon on a Friday usually means that you hit Hamburg around 5 p.m. And this means that you'll be trying to pass a major urban area during the weekend rush hour.
And when you're met with heavy snowfall at Lübeck – increasing to a blizzard in a couple of miles – you know you're in for trouble. So for sure traffic goes into a standstill when we merge with the Berlin Autobahn A24/E26.
The freezing precipitation – unusual for March – makes the surface of the road glassier by the minute. And the dense traffic would not allow for any actions to prevent or keep the ice away.
So we line up – cars to the left and trucks to the right – and "tiptoe" forward with great caution in jerky moves at maximum 10 km/h (6 mph). The local radio station reports more than 300 incidents only within the Hamburg area.
This is not the first time I have difficulties passing Hamburg. Already in 1965 I spent 13 involuntary hours here on a hitchhike to Paris. And a couple of those were in hiding from the early morning rain under this very bridge.
A slow ride brings on many memories!

Hi, Kaj! Interesting idea and perfect composition! Snow is adding plus points for scene! Regards,

Very effective composition and great exposure & I don't mind the overexposed sky at all. Nice DOF too showing the long line of queue... Perhaps that bit @ bottom right not that clean but overall a very nice image.

I haven't had much time lately but I was just randomly browsing through the gallery and the red and the snow popped out at me in the thumbnails. And only once I opened it did I see it was one of yours. I hope you had a good trip, despite the traffic jam. It made for a nice photo. Great lines with the red truck and blue overpass girders. The line of trucks and cars on the curving path gives a nice depth into the snowy weather and the falling snow adds to the sense of movement that is apparently not happening here.
This reminds me of passing Chicago to get to Iowa. Except it's not weather related there. To go the 20 or 30 miles through Gary, IN and the southern suburbs of Chicago can take aboutu 2 hours because of all the construction and a single toll booth in Illinois in the middle of I-80.
At least this time you had a car and were out of the elements and it wasn't 13 hours.

Knowing how snowfall usually does not show wery clearly in photos, this weather looks really bad!
The overpass was well chosen point to shoot.
I'm glad that i didn't have to be there. But it's still snowing here in Tampere.

Hi - don't be offended when I say I think it's an "ugly" picture - because I think that is just the idea you tried to convey by your note: this is not a pleasant place to be. It's actually a good shot - a picture of a place you actually don't want to be, but a place you find yourself observing and participating in, and finding something to be fascinated by.

Hi Kaj. Well, this sure illustrates the nasty winter we had for so unusually long this season. To that extent, the photo which is not "pretty" at all does its job ideally. The highway overpass interjecting with the line of trucks creates a good V-shape in the compo. I might have cropped 1 or 2 more cm at the top but it would only be marginally different. Nice storytelling in your note, too. Greetings from Tokyo.

Hi kaj, looks like winter is not finished, you did pretty well in thie situation, the result is very clear and the contrast, sharpness are excellent. You chose an excellent spot with the bridge and the truck on the right, leaving enough space on the left to not overcharged, well executed, good work. We had 22°C last friday, it was awesome...but around 0° with some chance of snow flake for the next few day and mostly a lot of rain.....so small planes will stay on the groung :-) Thanks for sharing !

A way to familiar sight on a way to familiar place. To me it seems that the roadwork a few km away has been going on forever. I always say that those germans must be a talented people and their biggest talent must be making a "stau".
However the pic is great knowing how difficult it's to get the snowfall on piz,
Very Well done

A very cold and wet feeling from the mittons falling. The trucks and the bridge build up a fine composition of crossing diagonals. I also like the few basic colors in this, the clean blue and red, on trucks, steelbeams and rear lights.
