Photographer’s Note

Many people post a picture of the dome of the Reichtag-building in Berlin. Not very strange, cos it is a great piece of architecture, so I would like to show a picture of it too!

After the reunification of East- and West Germany, the Reichstag-building in the heart of Berlin is used again as the seat of the German Parliament (Bundestag).
But in the 1990ies the building had to be renovated first. The most important part of this renovation was the construction of the dome. It was designed by Sir Norman Foster. The dome is made of steel and glass and was placed over the meeting-hall. Foster was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1999 for his work on the building, from where you've a magnificent view on Berlin!

Something about the Reichstag itself. It was built between 1884 and 1894. You can call this building as a symbol for the European history in the 20th century. The building has been witness of the fall of the German Emperor in 1918, after that the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and Hitler's Third Reich. It was also witness of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of the two Germanies.
In 1933 the building burned down and during the war, the Reichstag was heavily damaged. After the war the building was restored. It was situated in West-Berlin close to the Wall. The official German reunification ceremony on October 3, 1990, was held at the Reichstag-building.
The Reichstag was wrapped by the Bulgarian artist Christo in 1995, attracting millions of visitors.
In 1999 the renovation works were completed and the seat of parliament was transferred to the Reichstag in April 1999.

A different view can be seen here.

I cropped this picture a bit and added a frame.
Hope you like it!
