Photographer's Note

The river Eider, Schleswig-Holstein’s tallest river, has a total length of 188 km, but is navigable from Rensburg only. The navigable part starts right in the middle of the town of Rensburg, it is not connected to the Kiel Canal which runs parallel to it.
The river offers a romantic tour through the lowlands in the middle of the flat, North German landscape. Taking a trip on Schleswig-Holstein’s most important waterway is to journey back in time. All you need is a boat like this and “may there always be a handswidth of water under the keel” (a popular German seafarer’s greeting). A ship is no good in a dry dock, or on land - with enough water you can make it through anything.

I cant help but hope that “may there always be a handswidth of water under the keel” is a lot snappier in the German. It seems a bit of a mouthful in English !

Another lovely moody image from you of your favourite subject boats. Have you ever posted a picture of yours - You do have one ??

The anchored boats gave good depth on image, Harriet.

Hello Harriet,
This is indeed a very flat scenery, but the water looks calm enough for a pleasant ride, and maybe there will interesting sights along the way. I wouldn't call the nearest, blue and white boat pretty, but I guess it's functional for this kind of calm trip. It all looks very nice though, and the weather is fine, so why not?

a wonderful and very well considered composition which shows the narrow pier, the row of boats and just enough of the calm river to create a desire of departure on a slow, fascinating trip. I like very much the inclusion of the greenery on the left and the pole on the right. Depth and clarity are great, lighting is marvelous. Hello Harriet, i was born and live in a flat land, near the sea, with several canals, a kind of landscape that is very similar to that in your shot.
Another photo of the northern area of Germany that remind me a familiar landscape.
Large spaces and horizons and the same kind of vegetations.
Apart this, your picture is well taken, optimal exposure, colors and sharpness.

Informative write up, yes the water is high enough, they are well under keel and it's time to make the journey. This is common in certain waterways which is restricted to tidal condition, thus precise timing is vital for safe navigation. The pov and postioning frame the scene, which works really well with excellent perspective. The white boat stands out nicely blend into the evironment, hamoniuos and a resonably good reflections. Peaceful looking spot shaded by wonderful looking sky, a real being there feel, well composed image and much vivid details to absorb from fg to the far end. Splendid piece of photo work, Congrats. Hello Harriet,

You have chosen a fine pov with f/g interest from the berthing spaces and the bright, blue boat, with its accompanying reflection. Good guide lines create an excellent sense of depth and perspective.
Your favourite subject hits the mark, again for mood and an awakening spring vitality.
Maybe a little crop of the upper sky would give a better positioning of the horizon line.

The water is very calm creating a nice mirror like reflection. the perspective with the pier is well defined on the left & the boat with its rather odd shape cerainly stands out. A small but informative note to accompany as always!
