Photographer's Note

Many people in Northern Europe are eagerly looking forward to the arrival of warm weather and longer days. It is not a modern tradition; rather it is something, which goes deep into the marrow of the people in Northern Europe. It harkens back to the pagan traditions of thousands of years before Christianity and it is a longstanding part of our culture. Having longer days means having more time to enjoy nature, to be together with the family and friends and to celebrate the joy of life.
The popular German poem “Der Mai ist gekommen”, written in 1842 by the German poet Emanuel Geibel, describes this feeling. Here is the English version:

“May has arrived now, the trees began to sprout.
Let at home stay who is worried, but we are going out!
Like the clouds that are sailing across the sunny sky,
We are wandering through the wide world,
Say narrowness goodbye.”

What Geibel did not know was that in these days driving by car has become an important part of the lifestyle.
