Photographer’s Note
Columnar joint basalt.
It is formated during the cooling of a thick lava flow, contractional joints or fractures form. So, it is extrusive vulcanic rock.
I was told by the guide, that here in Stolpen (Germany), there is a locus classicus of this form of basalt (it was described from here).
Very regular and symmetric form, but it is formed by nature. Quite strange...
