The photo shows the maypole in the tiny village of Sieseby near Eckernförde. The maypole is a spring symbol that dates back to pagan times. Raising the maypole symbolizes the planting of trees and spring's reawakening. Ancient Germanic people believed that each tree contained a soul, and they planted trees to commemorate births. They celebrated the marriage of the earth goddess by decorating a tree with ribbons and flowers, similar to modern decorations. They also planted a young birch on May 1st as a dedication to the pagan gods. Today the maypole is usually a very tall treetrunk denuded of its branches, and it is installed by the villagers on the eve of 1st May, to remain in place for at least a month. The process is usually orchestrated by a farmer with a tractor, but the business of getting the pole to the vertical is the business of the menfolk of the village, using a Lilliputian selection of long sticks and ropes. The process is usually helped by lots of shouting, and the provision of Bratwurst and beer, and once the pole is up, its bottom section bedded into a deep hole in the ground, it is decorated with tinsel and garlands and often with the symbols of local crafts and guilds. This year Sieseby’s maypole is an economical version since the villagers decorated a flagpole!

that is very interesting note and I like as well the photo which goes with it. It is very touching that in some places people still care to preserve such traditions.
I like how the maypole got included in here in very good composition which shows as well original household. It looks almost like a open air museum. Pretty colors and well handled light.
Thanks for sharing

A very attractive scene and a very good picture. I also enjoy your note here. We have seen many maypoles in Germany and we also have quite similar maypoles in Sweden. The difference is that we raise them at midsummer but still call them maypoles ("majstänger", in singular "majstång").

Beautiful image show the rural village house and may decorations. Personally, I also believe plants and trees has to be treated as they have some sort of soul - even nobody had proven this.
Beautiful light on that day, rendered colors most vividly.
Good evening and nice weekend,

This is a very pleasant and pretty photo with attractive mild colours. Personally I don't care much for maypoles or flagpoles, but I would gladly take a share of the Bratwurst and beer. Apart from the nicely decorated "budget pole" I like the cart with what I guess are varous local products. The building with its thatched roof and the surrounding trees are very nice too.

Ciao cara Harriet
These maypoles are something unheard of in my own country, so they are a delightful treat to see in a photo like this. The old house in the background and rustic old cart in the foreground complement it beautifully. What an idyllic and very rustic scene. Well done and thanks for sharing it with us.

Klasse Kombi aus Text und Bild!
Grüße aus dem heute sonnig-warmen Siegen! Ein schönes Wochenende!

I know this tradition, I've seen maypoles in Aschheim, a town near Munich that is a twin town of Leros. Your picture is very vivid and vibrant, although there isn't movement in it, you've rendered the view so dynamic and attractive. I like very much the light and the colours, they are lively and delicious. There's a great abundance of natural and rustic details that make the setting so rewarding and interesting to observe. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
