Photographer's Note

A half-timbered and thatched 19th century cottage at Sieseby on the banks of the Schlei Fjord in Northern Schleswig-Holstein. Sieseby is certainly the most beautiful village in this region.
A row of Japanese roses marks the border between the outside world and the private haven. Shrubs and trees, including this old apple tree, screen the simple half-timbered property and create a feeling of calm. Today the cottage provides a holiday home for people who want to escape the busy life of Hamburg City, but it was a different picture 200 years ago.
The Schlei region was blessed with an abundant supply of oak, which was the most common material used for timber framing. Oak is hard and durable, which explains why so many half-timbered buildings have survived. Timber framing has high decorative qualities; with their blackened oak beams showing the fissures and cracks of great age.
