Photographer’s Note
Please don't become afraid, we are not trying to conquer the world again!
We are at the Kieler Fjord with its excellent natural conditions, the reason why Kiel became a Prussian naval base in 1871 and was declared to be the principal port of the German Imperial Empire. Since then the navy has traditionally formed the soul of Kiel. Even after a general reduction in the armed forces, the city of Kiel still remains the largest armed forces base in Northern Germany. You can see the pride of the German navy, the combat support ship "Frankfurt am Main" (A 1412) in the background. The ship renders support to navy tasks groups with the focus on logistic and medical support. The main task is to supply the units with fuel, consumables, provisions and ammunition.
Kiel has also won the reputation of the world capitol of sailing. Every year in the end of June the KIELER WOCHE, the biggest sailing event in the world, is the meeting place for about 5000 active sailors from 50 nations with more than 2000 yachts, yawls and surfboards.
The youngsters of the local yacht club have just more or less successfully finished training due to the motto "practice makes perfect"! Maybe one or two of them decide to continue in the navy when they are grown up.

Hi Harriet,
As I was teaching sailing on this little boats as a summer job, I'm even more touched by this one :) The contrast between the two kind of boats is great, but some are definitly more peaceful than the others !!! Nice capture :)
It's funny to find an "Obelix" little boat in Germany !
Have a nice afternoon,
Marion

Hi Harriet .
Kiel is a wonderful place !
Last september I went on a tour on the Kieler Channel .
I like your photo ! The "Frankfurt am Main " is immense and no doubt a technical wonder , so it is so good to see the youngsters being occupied with their small boats .
I like the nice reflections in the water too !
Have a nice weekend !
Cheers,
Dorte.

Hi Harriet,
You captured an excellent moment while including a two contra scene there. Monster navy ships are draws oppositeness after young sporter. Your photo is technically very good in natural colors and sharpness, especially with blue sea and reflections around pier. Congratulations. Have a nice weekend.
Best Regards,

Hi Harriet,
One of these brave youn sailors might one day be captain of one of these giants in the background.
Wonderful varying shades of blue to the sky and sea that contrast nicely with the white sails of these lovely wee vessels that are seen making a lovely reflection in the riffling harbor.

Hello Harriet,
A quite delightful shot!
The youngsters in the f/g make such an interesting scene in their own right. Then you have included the BIG BOYS which the little boys can aspire to! A very nicely inferred development.
The images are sharp, the colours are well saturated and the composition is vey good.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Harriet, nice shot and I rate this one based on the first line of your note, very clever. I like the shot, the composition is fine but I think it is a bit too bright but overall good.

Hi Harriet and first welcomeon TE!
I like the opposition between the little boat for children and the enormous baot from the navy. The little boat are exactly the same i use to learn sailing at school!
Good job, friendly.

Hallo Harriet,
It's good to know the "Plankton" is the pride of the German navy ;-)))
but as a French I think I could be more interested in riding "Obelix" !
Nice daily life scene with well measured exposure and the added value of the big ships so close, amazing there are no fences, security, cameras, etc...
Have a nice day JY

Good fine photo. I like the way the bigger ships stay at the background and the tiny "Optimist" in the foreground. Being a sailing enthusiast I thought the pride of the navy were those boys with their small boats!
Thanks for sharing,

Hallo Harriet,
Amazing contrast between the children's play boats and the big Navy ships.
I've been several times to Kiel (both Marinestützpunkt and Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft) in Portuguese ships, including once during the Kieler Woche.
Kiel is the harbor I was more time outside Portugal.

Harriet,
What a POV for comparison between the big navy ship and all the cute little dingies sail boat. Very good detail though the light is strong. You did well with all the sharpness and clarity. Good composition. Most of all it's the constrast of the subject that make this image interesting.

Hello Harriet
I love your ship pictures, it seems to be your specialised topic. What makes this is the big old warship against the young boys and their little sailing boats. Perfect exposures with the light you encountered, fine detail everywhere. Very well composed Harriet.

Hi Harriet,
Original photograph where contrast between these “marine monsters” and these small boats is surprising… I like also the contrast name of the boats: Obélix against Plankton, the large one and the infinitely small… A photograph with full with details, well seen Harriet. Once more I am allowed a WS, I hope that you will like.
With all my friendships and a very good day,
