Please don't become afraid, we are not trying to conquer the world again!
We are at the Kieler Fjord with its excellent natural conditions, the reason why Kiel became a Prussian naval base in 1871 and was declared to be the principal port of the German Imperial Empire. Since then the navy has traditionally formed the soul of Kiel. Even after a general reduction in the armed forces, the city of Kiel still remains the largest armed forces base in Northern Germany. You can see the pride of the German navy, the combat support ship "Frankfurt am Main" (A 1412) in the background. The ship renders support to navy tasks groups with the focus on logistic and medical support. The main task is to supply the units with fuel, consumables, provisions and ammunition.
Kiel has also won the reputation of the world capitol of sailing. Every year in the end of June the KIELER WOCHE, the biggest sailing event in the world, is the meeting place for about 5000 active sailors from 50 nations with more than 2000 yachts, yawls and surfboards.
The youngsters of the local yacht club have just more or less successfully finished training due to the motto "practice makes perfect"! Maybe one or two of them decide to continue in the navy when they are grown up.
