Photographer’s Note

Germany's northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein is flanked by the Baltic Sea in the East. With its extensive coastline, its fjord like inlets, rivers, canals and numerous inland lakes water is never far away making the state a prime destination for all kind of water sports.
In summer, the sails of tall ships, dinghies and yachts decorate Schleswig-Holstein’s coastline. And the capital Kiel has, due to excellent conditions on the water, won the reputation of the world capital of sailing. It was not only the organizer of two Olympic sailing competitions (in 1936 and in 1972) but also of Kieler Woche, the greatest sailing event in the world and the biggest summer festival in Northern Europe.
Water is the source of Kiel’s identity; incomparable experiences are possible, not only for sailors but also for sightseers. Even in poor weather the sight of white sails against the sky is very decorative.
I dedicate this image to everybody complaining about the winter weather here in Europe in remembrance of the very poor summer 2008!
