Photographer's Note

Eckernfoerde is a summer resort on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, about 65 miles North of Hamburg and 35 South of the Danish border. Situated on the banks of the Eckernfoerde Bay, the harbour has a unique waterfront location only a short distance from the city centre. Imagine that in the 19th century this city was one of the largest fishing towns on the Baltic Sea with a huge fish-processing industry. One third of the town‘s population of 6,000 was dependent on the fishery industry. But this centuries-old industry has steadily lost importance, and today the Eckernfoerde fishing fleet consists of just a handful of boats. It is in the tourist area that the harbor is now thriving, as a result of the construction of a marina for leisure craft. Further communal structural improvements to upgrade the harbor area have been quite successful.

Tourism plays a big role in Schleswig-Holstein’s economy, especially on the coast that is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. “Vacation as far as the eye can see” this motto under which Tourismus-Agency Schleswig-Holstein advertises the “land between the seas” makes some 4.5 million people to visit the country’s seaside resorts annually.

You found very interesting details for the foreground of this nicely composed photo. The background indicates the liveliness of the marine activities in this place. It looks like a paradise for boat lovers. Those who like me enjoy colours also get fully satisfied from this picture.

Hello Harriet - I like the way you have used the FG boats in this composition, the detail is good with the lovely wooden hull, booms and rope rigging. As we look beyond the FG a pretty harbour scene backed by lovely trees and a beautiful soft sky. Very attractive work with a clever composition. This looks like a really peaceful place to visit. Hallo Harriet. Es freut mich, das schöne Eckernförde von der Seeseite her zu sehen. Es ist viele Jahre her, dass ich zuletzt in dieser Gegend war. Das Bild ist wohlkomponiert. Jedes Bilddetail befindet sich am idealen Platz. Da kann ich nur sagen: gut gesehen und realisiert.

A very pleasant view, still with a strong feeling of summer! The lines from all the ropes and those other boat items (whatever they are called) meet at a point at the lower third of the picture. A very attractive composition.

your composition is great and captivates the viewer's interest directing their glance in various points from foreground to background and back. You have connected the two sides of the harbour excellently by framing the distant view with elements of the foreground. Isn't it reassuring that places can reinvent themselves when their original use ceases to be viable. It is evolution applied to places rather than creatures.

I like how you have used the details of the crafts, in the f/g, to set the scene and the mood. The narrow dof works really well in this instance, the gently blurred b/g providing a good sense of context.

Nach einem kleinen Mosel-Urlaub bringst Du meine Gedanken wieder in den "hohen Norden". Eckernförde ist ein wirklich nettes Städtchen mit vielen schönen Ecken und Du hast hier solch einen Ort eingefangen. Das warme (Nachmittags-?)Licht lässt viele Flächen aufleuchten und erzeugt eine wunderbare Stimmung im Bild.

I really enjoy this warm light and strong saturation. It is still natural but so very attractive. The tight cut is also very eye-catching and artistic. Your love of boats and ships comes across so well in an excellent photo such as this.

Hi Harriet,

there is something about harbor environment that is very attractive, perhaps it by water and perhaps back in the day, it meant food, seafood and more. Here the foreground of close up boat and distance red houses and autumn color tree adds to the warm and charm of the place.
