Photographer's Note

You would probably disagree with me that this is a fine beach, but the shore of the river Sorge near Bergenhusen is serving its purpose quite well since bathing water quality in Northern Germany has improved significantly over the last 20 years. In my region (Schleswig-Holstein) the bathing season runs from 15 May through to mid-September during which water quality is assessed on different occasions. Samples are taken and tested for certain types of bacteria which indicate the presence of pollution mainly from sewage or livestock waste. It is the responsibility of the environment agency to ensure that our water courses are of high enough quality for the general public to bathe in. And by 2015 bathing waters in Germany even have to meet stricter water quality targets under a revised bathing water directive. As well as improving water quality there is a much stronger emphasis in the new legislation on managing beaches and providing information.
