Here I show you the small village Alken on Moselle river with its castle "Thurant" on top of the hill. There are villages with the name Alken also in Belgium and in Denmark and all are connected by partnerships. Alken first was mentioned in the 10th century and up to the 13th century it belonged to the Electoral Palatinate which built castle Thurant from1198 to 1206 in order to secure his tenure against the nearby territories of the archbishops of Cologne and Treves (in German: Trier). This caused armed hostilities which culminated in a long siege of the castle by troops of the bishops. It ended in 1248 when the palsgrave handed the castle over to the two archbishops.
The region around Alken was governed until the 18th century by both bishoprics.
It is interesting that the burggraves of both sovereigns had an own donjon, own residential buildings, own outbuildings and an own entrance - all separated by a big wall, but it worked ....
Also interersting is the name of the castle. The builder owner, palsgrave Heinrich I, a Guelf, took part in the 3rd crusade of Frederic I Barbarossa. In the course of this crusade he besieged in vain fortress Thuron near the city Tyros in the today Lebanon and he considered this name as suitable for his new castle at home. Unfortunately the castle high above Alken was impregnable only until 1248 ...

You can see closeup views of the castle in the workshop and here.

Howdy Frank!
Very interesting cityscape. Good perspective. Nice colors.
Regards!

Hello Frank,
How very pretty this village looks by the river. The hillside below the castle also looks very tidy. The picture is well composed and the colours are really fine.
Greetings from a sunny Stockholm.
Gert

Hello Frank,
A beautiful riverside view under a very nice light. The scene is well composed with the church being nicely juxtapositioned with the castle. I like the field patterns of the vineyards that help draw the eyes from the village up towards the dominating castle. Excllent clarity and colours.

As always, citizens are down there and feudals are high up! :) Great photo and especially interesting is this thing about two different feudals separated only by one wall.

Ciao Frank!!
what a lovely view! I like a lot such a landscape: a castle, some fields on the hill side, and a fine village near the river.
And a sunny day...!
Today my village is sunny too and my garden is full blooming!
Ciao!

Livia

Good evening Frank,

This photo reminds me of a trip we took through the Moselle valley. The villages hardly look real- they remind me of a model railroad scene.

Alken has quite a history! Mady knows of the town in Belgium. Probably doesn't have a similar history. ;-)

Regards,
Randy
PS. Hope you had a nice visit in Trier.

Hallo Frank. Das Photo gefällt mir sehr gut. Die Staffelung Wasser, Häuserzeile, Weinberge, Burg und Himmel wirkt hervorragend. Wirklich sehenswert. Gruß, Wolfgang.

Guten Abend Frank,

I find your WS very nice, it castle with a little bit in the misty atmosphere.
But also this picture is very fine, the village on the edge of the river, the vineyard care for the different parts on the hill, together with a wonderful light cloudy sky.
Very well done, thanks for sharing.

Have a nice day,
John.

Hello Frank,
Is here almost all, what we meet in the scenery: is dark and blear water of Moselle, is the nice row of buildings of the small city, are hills with a castle protecting of the access to homesteads below and is at last the beautifully blue sky. All in proper proportions, in the good colouring and the beautiful sharpness.
Best regards with Mosina and Poznan,
Jurek

Bravo
Denis
