Photographer’s Note

This was last last evening of our little holiday, we were flying home to Scandinavia the next day. We were spending the last night in the Moselle valley and took a walk along the vineyards.

I heard a typical trumpet sound from the sky and when I looked up, I saw all these Common Cranes (Grus grus) flying south.

I guess they had been spending their summer in northern Scandinavia and were now returning to northern Africa. They will return back again in March - April, they usually spend their first days in Sweden at Hornborga lake in southwestern Sweden. There will be thousands of them and a big event for bird watchers. After some days, resting and eating frozen potatoes, they continue to their nesting places in northern Scandinavia.

I counted to 132 cranes here and in the WS you can see a photo taken 6 seconds earlier.
