Medieval Bridge Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is a medieval quarrystone bridge in the course of the access and the old pilgrimage trail to the nearby MONASTERY MARIENSTATT with its wonderful ABBEY CHURCH. It is situated in the picturesque river valley of Nister in the low mountain range Westerwald in the north of the German state Rheinland-Pfalz.

This bridge first was mentioned in a deed of the year 1478, but probably it is much more older (the near by abbey church was built from13th to 15th century). It also was part of the street between the medieval commercial centres of Cologne and Leipzig in eastern Germany.
The structure has four arches and it bridges a distance of 38 metres. As you can see each pillar has a huge cutwater because this little river in times of snowmelt looks quite different.
Today the bridge only serves pedestrian traffic.

Guten Morgen Frank,

sehr schöne Aufnahme dieser sicherlich alten Brücke, etwas wenig Wasser in dem Flußbett, aber das ist leider fast überall zu bemerken, hängt wohl auch zum Teil an unserer "Klimaveränderung"..

Bonjour Frank ,
Un joli pont médiéval , comme on en trouve aussi beaucoup en France . Il est particulièrement bien mis en valeur , dans son environnement luxuriant . Le point de vue est très bien choisi , la lumière bien gérée .

This picturesque scene sets me back several hundred years, I almost expect to see some armoured knights on horseback..!

A very beautiful old bridge! I guess there is unusually low water at the moment, it seems quite easy to wade across here without a bridge ;) but what does it look like with high water? Very attractive colours!

Indeed a picturesque and atmospheric place....
You depicted it in a nice way with the bridge just out of the centre, the leaning tree on the right and lots of space for the rocks in the shallow water.

I love such locations... well, I'm romantic, so I feel a bit more romantic when I look at them! It'd be better be myself there, enjoying a pleasant moment, meditating...
The green around the medieval bridge is impressive and a great framing for it! The creek with all those stones looks wonderful here!

schöne Perspektive dieser eindrucksvollen Brücke mit sehr natürlichen Farben. Es ist ein wenig schade, dass das Licht nicht so ganz mitspielt. Die Bäume rahmen den Eindruck hervorragend. Am eindrucksvollsten ist für mich das schöne Flußbett. Kompliment!

This bridge that you show us in your framing and its surroundings in a so green forest looks like a fairy-tale image.
I like the effect of the light in the branches and the reflections that we can see on the water.
The simplicity of the image gives it a great graphical strength.

Atmospheric indeed - again a little place with a huge history behind. Very good masonwork though - for this bridge to stand since that far away centuries and still - stand.
