Photographer’s Note

This is the nave of the church St. Gangolf the market and parish church of the Old Town of Trier. The first church here was built in 958, the second one on this place about 1300 and the today's building was constructed about 1500. The only older church in Trier is the cathedral, the oldest cathedral of Germany, built in the 4th century.

St. Gangolf all times was closely surrounded by houses (please see map view left hand). One only can reach its entrance through a small baroque portal and an alleyway. The west tower of this citizen's church (please see workshop) has a size of 62 meters - higher than the cathedral. Therefore in 1512 the south tower of the cathedral was extended by the then archbishop Richard von Greiffenklau in order to overtrump the citizens.
