Photographer’s Note

This is an interior view of the gorgeous church St. Paulin in Trier (St. Paulinus was bishop in Trier from 346 to 353). It was built in style of late baroque by the Trier archbishop and elector Franz Georg von Schönborn-Buchheim - at his own expense (!). He laid the foundation stone in 1734. The church was built on the foundations of the central nave of the forerunner building, a Romanesque church from the year 1148. It had been blown by French troops in 1674. The first church at this place was built already in the 4th (!) century on a Roman burial ground.

The interior of this one nave church was designed by Johann Balthasar Neumann, one of the most ingenious masterbuilders of the baroque area.
The church was consecrated in 1757. In 1794 Trier was occupied again by French troops and it is said, that Naploeon then was very enthusiastic about this church. In 1802 the monastery St. Paulin and most of the monasteries and abbeys of Trier were closed and expropriated - but in 1804 St. Paulin again was declared a parish church.
In 1958 this church because of its importance was declared a basilica by pope Pius XII.

Entering this church is a breathtaking experience because of its overwhelming - baroque - interior.

Baroque was the art form of absolutism and counter-reformation - beginning in Italy. From there it spread particularly in the Catholic countries of Europe.

Due to these facts I really was appalled at the second last entry in the guestbook which is displayed in the church. You can see it in the workshop ...
