Photographer’s Note
Trier is the oldest city in Germany, founded in 16 B.C.
It is also one of the few cities in Europe to become the capital of the Roman Empire. Trier also has the most Roman architectural remains outside of Rome itself.
This image is Porta Nigra, Latin for Black Gate. It was built from grey sandstone between 180 and 200 A.D.
This was one of four gates to the Roman city and the only one left. It's stones have been used in other buildings and portions reconstructed, yet the Gate is still impressive and a reminder of Rome's empire.

Hello Ray,
Trier was one of my favorite locations in Germany, especially as I stood beneath the amphitheatre and peered across the expansive field where once fought gladiators and slaves versus tigers and lions. The last day I stood beneath the walls where the slaves awaited their turn to entertain the "Holy" Roman higher ups it was cold, damp, and foggy, and to this day I recall the chill running down my back as I could feel the coldness of the events that once took place.
Were the Roman Baths still operating when you were there?
An excellent image, though it may be just a little soft...

THanx Ray!
And, infact, today is April 21st, what we call "Natale di Roma" which recalls April 21st 753 AC when Rome was founded.
Good job and have a nice day!
Rikk

Hello Ray,
An impressive gate to the city; very impressive when you look at the people at the bottom of the picture.
Best regards, Paul
