Photographer’s Note

This beautiful classical-style building is the Johannes Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. It stands just opposite the famous Mainz cathedral.

Johannes Gutenberg, who lived in the 15th century, was the inventor of the printing press. His invention is credited with making knowledge much more mobile than it used to be in those days, and for bringing about major social change in Germany and Europe. There is a statue of him in a nearby square and I shall post it on trekearth this week.

I didn't actually go inside the museum as it was approaching evening when I got there and it was closed or just about to be. Next time I visit Mainz I'll do so.
