[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one wall of the huge fortification "Ehrenbreitstein", vis-a-vis the mouth of river Moselle into river Rhine - 118 m above the rivers near Koblenz. It's the biggest quite preserved fortification of Europe. A long time ago, already in the year 1000, there has been a castle at this cliff, which was able to control the northern access of the narrow middle Rhine valley. The fortress was constructed in the 16. century, 1801 demolished by french revolution troops. It's today shape was rebuilt from 1817 to 1823. It belongs to the World Heritage "Middle Rhine Valley"

When visiting it today, you can't avoid an oppressive feeling, because of these enormous walls, casemates, tunnels, moats, loopholes ... and you often can hear: "What a madness ...!"

The view from Rhine river up to the fortress you can see here.

Using the map view function at the left you can zoom in (please click several times at +) exactly to this fortress and it's interesting and impressive composition.

Bonjour Frank

Have a nice day!

Hi Frank,
Yes, this is really an impressive wall with very fine colours. Maybe I should have tried to grop the left side to 'purify' the photo into just the wall. It is also interesting the see the satellite photo, you can see exactly the same Vauban-type of bastions as at the Varberg Fortress, but unfortunately GoogleEarth has very poor resolution up here.
Regards
Gunnar

Really impressive part of a fortress.
Well done, interesting note.
Regards my dear friend.

Bonsoir Frank

Jacques

Hi , Frank .
What a powerful construction !
Somehow this looks very modern regarding the
curves and frames around the arrow slits !
Very impressive fortification and a good view point also from the Rhine !
Greetings
Dorte.
