Photographer's Note

Yesterday I showed you the autumnal vineyards of Alf on the left bank of Mosel river.
This is a view of the village Ellenz some kilomters downstream - also on the left bank of Mosel river. The photo was taken from the other side, from the small village Beilstein. I again was fascinated by all these autumnal colours in the vineyards around.

Ellenz first was mentioned about the year 1100 in a list of the properties of the monastery Karden, not far from here and later on it became a royal court estate (fiscus elendesam). Because of its well-known wines then several noble families had wine-growing estates here. In my photo you can see the old parish church St. Martin with its white steeple - a bit outside above the village. It was built already about 1200. It is supposed that a Merovingian church has been at this place already in the 7th century.
