[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is castle Arras, probably the oldest German castle. It is situated in a western tributary valley of Moselle valley, about 3 kilometers away from the small town Alf on the bank of Moselle river.
Castle Arras was first mentioned in written form in 1120 on the occasion of the consecration of the chapel there. Since then the name of the castle has been retained unchanged. Already during the late antiquity there has been a fortified Latin housing estate on this steep hill (see photo of the view to Moselle valley from the donjon in the workshop). Late-medieval legends tell that there was built a castle in the time of the invasions of the Hungarians or of the Normans in the 10th century. It is supposed that there was a castle about the year 938 and the mighty donjon has been erected in this time.
At first the castle was property of the palsgraves and later on of the archbishops and electors of Trier. It was destroyed by French troops in the 17th century. From 1907 to 1910 it was rebuilt using the old existing walls.
Today there's a small museum, a cosy hotel and a wonderful restaurant. It's possible to go up there by car half of the hill where there is a parking place - but the drive-up way is a bit adventurous. Guests of the hotel and handicapped people are allowed to drive up just to the castle's gate.

You can't see the donjon in my photo because it's situated behind the castle's building. You only can see three pinnacles of it sticking out over the roof ridge, but you can see it here.

Using the map view function at the left you can zoom in (please click several times at +) exactly to the castle.

Beautiful castle. The fine architecture of the building and the colours make it very attractive.
Your picture does capture its beauty very well and the sharp details a pleasure to enjoy. Thanks Frank :-)

Bonjour Frank,

Hello Frank,
A fine composition of this beautiful old castle. Good framing from the wall covered with greenery on the right, whilst the path leads the eye towards the main subject. A lovely sharp image.

Regards my dear friend from hot Silesia.

Hallo Frank,

Bien vu !

this is a well preserved building and well shown in what appears to be sunlight..:)
your tree branch just keeps it all down and makes the sky secondary

Frank,
Great photo with nice composition and detail. The sky is a bit overexposed but the rest of the shot is great. The colors are good as well. I like the way the path leads the eye into the photo.

Hi Frank,

What a wonderful building .. you chose a great point of view .. it adds a great of depth and dimension to your building .. I love the little terrace on the right ..

take care,

John

Good composition of a historical building. The trees and plants here and there make a nice contrast with the stones and slates of the castle. However I'm wondering what happened to the right side of the photo, it looks blurred.
Good work Frank!

Thành.
