Photographer’s Note

Yesterday I showed you another artwork in the church "Maria zur Höhe" (~ Mary on the hill) - in the vernacular called "Hohnekirche" in Soest a town in the east of the federal state Nordrhein-Westfalen. It was built at the very beginning of the 13th century.

Be reason of several incidents - e.g. the marriage of Otto II and Theophanu, (niece of the Eastern Roman Emperor), the house of Hohenstaufen (also kings of Sicily) and the crusades - Byzantine culture and Arabian influences expanded also into Westphalia. Thus some of the wall and choir paintings of Hohnekirche obviously have Byzantine elements, especially concerning clothes of the shown characters.
My photo shows a part of the paintings in the main choir, made about the year 1240. It shows Mary with the child, John the Baptist and John the Apostle - surrounded by 16 angels in Byzantine clothes. Similar motifs are to be found in Palermo/Sicily (see above!).

In the workshop you can see a part of the paintings in the so-called Catherine Choir from the year 1260. It shows the coronation of Mary.

Guten morgen lieber Frank,
Wieder eine lehrreiches Beitrag mit eine der meiner Lieblingsfarben -die turkisblau- als Grundierung. Fuer goldbemalungen das passendste.
Gute Symmetrie. Auch WS ist ganz interessant.
In Sachen Mariendarstellungen ist eine meiner Favoriten eine kleine niedliche byzantinische Kirche am Goldenen Horn.
Eine byzantinische Prinzessin verliebte sich in einen mongolischen Prinzen. Sie christin er pagane. Dann gelang es ihr, ihn zu konventieren. Nach einer Weile liess er an Erinnerung an seine grosse Liebe eine kleine Kirche zu bauen. Die Maler und Kuenstler bekam er allerdings aus der Mongolei. Deshalb alle Madonnaabbildungen an den Fresken und Ikonen tragen mongolische Hautfarbe und Gesichtszuege (schlitzaugen) !

The image of this type are not easy to realize in a church, with in general a measured lighting. The details are superb. It is excellent and interesting work.

Bonjour Frank,
Ce sont de magnifiques peintures qui ornent le plafond de cette très vieille église. Les prises de vue ne sont pas faciles en intérieur, surtout quand c'est au-dessus de notre tête. Tu as réussi celles-ci, sans flash et peut-être sans trépied, c'est très bien.
Je te souhaite un excellent weekend malgré le froid et le gris que tu m'as annoncé mon Ami

Bonjour Frank.
Cette photo est très plaisante à voir. La peinture est très belle avec les bleus et les ors. Il faut s'imaginer qu'à l'époque toutes les églises étaient ainsi peintes aussi bien à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur.

Hallo Frank,
je länger ich das Bild betrachte, desto besser glaube ich den Trick der alten Meister verstehen zu können. Mir scheint, sie nutzten die konkave Form der Kuppel zur Erzeugung eines gewissen Raumgefühls - was man aber nur an Ort und Stelle (und besonders in Bewegung) erleben kann. Es ist bekannt, dass die Italiener seit dem Quattrocento bewusst mit dem 3D Effekt im Zusammenwirken von Architektur und Malerei spielten - aber auch die Byzantiner und so früh? Man lernt immer etwas.
Mir gefällt die präzise Aufnahme mit echten Farben und guten Details - zum vollen Erlebnis fehlt hier nur die dritte Dimension.
