Photographer’s Note

This is a view of Königswinter, situated on Rhine river, about 35 km south of Cologne, not far away from Bonn. In the background at the right you can see "Drachenfels" ("Dragon's Rock", 321 m), the hill with the castle ruin on it's top. The castle was built in the 12th century by the archbishop of Cologne. It's one of the hills of the tiny low mountain range "Siebengebirge" and immediately next to Rhine river. A little bit left underneath the top you can see castle Drachenburg, built in 1883 by the rich broker, banker and later on even baron Stephan von Sarter.

I think, Drachenfels perhaps is the most popular mountain of Germany. The view from there, 260 m above the large river, upstream and downstream is breathtaking. With about 2 millions of visitors it is supposed to be the mostly climbed mountain of Europe. The summit can be accessed by the Drachenfels Railway, starting in Königswinter, since 1883, but I think it wasn't built for the baron. ;-)

Königswinter with about 41000 inhabitants is a popular town and summer resort on the right bank of Rhine. Nearby is the northernmost vineyard of Germany.

Using the map "view" function at the left you can zoom in (please click several times at +) exactly to this shipping pier. South-east of the town you can see Drachenfels with it's ruin.
