Photographer’s Note

Two symbols of Düseldorf: Town hall and Jan Wellem monument.

The oldest part of the town hall is from the year 1570-73. Architect: H. Tussmann, 1749 redesigned by Johann Joseph Couven (addition of portal and balcony a.o.).

Duke Elector Johann Wilhelm (1658-1716), also called Jan Wellem, stands in front of the scene as a knight. The city of Düsseldorf owes its first heyday to this art parton: with the construction of the opera and art gallery he established her reputation as a city of art. In 1711, the court sculptor Gabriel Grupello created this monument to the Elector.
Translation of the inscription on the left side:'Johann Wilhelm', the Count Palatine on the Rhine, the Lord High Steward and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, the Duke of Bavaria, Jülich, Cleve, Berg, the highly meritorious Prince who has enlarged the city and founded the art gallery'
On the right side: 'Erected by the grateful citizens in 1711. Base renewed in 1831'.
Düsseldorf's landmark is considered one of the most beautiful equestrian statues north of the Alps.

By clicking on the map left side you can get a satellite photo with marker pointing onto the statue.
