From time to time i just have to show this amazing
building, although it has been shown so many times before.

Yesterday i read a newspaper-article about how the
Cologne Cathedral was attacked during WWII,
especially on march 2nd, 1945 by the Royal Airforce.
Who in his right mind could order an attack on this
marvellous house of god?!...It survived 14 aircraft-bomb-hits.

The interior, the roof, the windows were of course all
destroyed, but the building itself stood firm.
On march 4th, 1945 the american forces gave out a
written order to stop shooting at the cathedral.

This shot was taken on a winter morning from the rheinpark.

Hi Thorsten,

Jeez, just seeing your title I immediately get Elton John in my head with his song, and I'm not even a fan of Elton John!! ;-)

But you must be joking about your comment on the bombardments, are you not?! You are really wondering how someone can be desensitized to bomb a cathedral... Well, it's war... There is not often sense in what happens:

1941 The Luftwaffe bombed the city of Belgrade on April 6 (Palm Sunday) without a declaration of war, continuing bombing until April 10. (Later on, Belgrade was bombed again in 1944 by the allied forces...);

1941 September 22: Hitler issues "Directive No. 1601" ordering "St. Petersburg must be erased from the face of the Earth" and "we have no interest in saving lives of civilian population.";

1941 - 1942 January–December: Direct Nazi artillery bombardments of the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments from a distance of 16 km from the Hermitage;

1942 April 4: Operation Eis Stoß (Ice impact) begins under the personal control of Goering. Hundreds of Luftwaffe bombers make a series of air raids on Leningrad with incendiary and heavy bombs.

Well, the list continues and continues and is also easily made of all the allied strikes on German and Nazi-occupied cities in Europe during World War II.

So if you wonder how someone in his right mind would start bombing a cathedral... To damage morale and to test a new military concept. The Strategic Bombing Offensive as it was called.

Greetings, Dennis

It was anticipated that the concentration of bombing over such a short period would overwhelm the Cologne fire brigades and cause conflagrations similar to those inflicted on London by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz.
(This military strategy had been proven very succesful in destruction under Nazi command, so I think the allied forces did not feel like changing a 'succesful strategy'. It is just all so sad what happens in times of war...)

Hallo Thorsten,
Meine Mutter ist aus Koblenz, und ich habe jetzt festgestellt dass ich Heimweh nach Reinland habe :)
Ich lebe in der Türkei,
Alles Gute,

Hello Thorsten!
I didn't know that You are on TE as well. I like the composition and light of a rising sun. Interesting architecture, fine, smooth colours.

Hallo Thorsten!
Als ich Deinen Kommentar las, dachte ich sofort, au weia, da kommt was... naja, und es ist gekommen. Ich war mir sofort sicher, dass der Name Hitler hier erscheinen würde - und er erschien. Naja, .... no further comment...
Dein Foto zeigt den Dom in einem großartigen Morgenlicht (...aus Richtung Siegen ;-)
das irgendwie eine wunderschön feierliche Stimmung erzeugt.
Grüße aus "den Bergen"!

Hi thorsten
nice light on that magnificient building and good foreground plant.
I was in the believe the RAF did not touched the cathedral since it is a very good repairing point.
regards
didier

Hi Thorsten,
Really great composition. I like the sharp details and forground detail as well.

Hallo Torsten,

ciao
Silvio

PS: to Dpbours...in 1945 allied force has practically already won the war..therefore it was a non-sense to erase monuments. nevertheless I do agree on the fact the failed painter from branau was the devil.

Hi Dear

What a nice view of those building's and entire location, Mostly i like the color tone of this picture, the golden lights, nice composition. Shrub in water and water looks good, although if we can see the reflection than could be more better (may be i wrong). But nice picture with so much informative note.

kind regards

rajiv

Very inspiring morning light on a great building.
Personally I'd have sought a POV without reeds, but it does add scale to the foreground so it works well with the branches on the left.

Hello Thorsten! Wonderful Koelnischer Dom! Amazing perspective. Nice lightness. Good shot. Well done!

Very pretty postcard - excellent light and tones, with a good POV.

bis 20-05-08 ich darf nur kommentieren.

Hello Thorsten!
Now you give us another landmark - a german one!
What a nice cathedral, wonderful architecture!
Fortunately, it's still standing and you captured a great POV, adding the river, some vegetation and boats!
TFS - Congratulations!
