The 13th century Gross Sankt Martin is a Romanesque Catholic church in Cologne, viewed here from the corner of Martinstrasse and Muhlengasse through modern dwelling houses. Found this askewed POV with its surprising appearance and contrast, while walking around town.
Location on the map: 50.9391, 6.9617

I am struck by the contrast between the two juxtaposed structures. One is concrete, straight lines, minimalistic, the decoration being from plants; the other natural stone, curves and towers, architectural decoration to please the eye and create maximum impact, a building to stay in the memory!
How times have changed, Ike!
One is to live in, the other is the house of God, that's the difference!
Have a great day,

I´ve been living in Cologne for so many Years and have never been to this church(I´ve heard its interior is also beautiful)
Not an easy task to frame such huge object in the frame, especially in densely built-up area like Cologne old town, but you did here really good work.
I like this juxtaposition of old,Romanesque style church and modern appartment buildings around.Every space is here well filled,so there´s so many great details to admire. For me also these green tree branches above are great addition to this architectural shot.
Wish You a nice day

A fantastic mix of old and modern architecture in this shot. Like the church with wonderful old world architecture towering above the modern flats. Excellent natural framing with the trees. Nicely done, thanks for sharing.

The buildings are framing well the church. The point of view is showing the details and the colours of the architecture of the St.Martin church. The light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

You're capturing well this Romanesque Catholic church by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the tall church with elegant/strong structure and the blue spire. It's also interesting in the surronding by modern dwelling houses with the terrace. And, the green leaves at upper side draw out a good harmony/gentleness in these archirectures.

I love the contrast between the modern and the classical. Well framed, well managed photo, congratulations.

Yes, that church has a very beautiful tower but I found it quite difficult to find an ideal POV for a picture of it.
Here you show very well the contrast between the different architectural styles and you've framed the picture nicely with the green leaves.
Best regards, Paul

beautiful snapshot of old and modern architecture in one. Wonderfully presented this lovely place. Colors, sharpness, clarity of details, POV are fantastic. I like it a lot. Great photo job. Tfs.
I hope that pigeon is pigeon (haha) I hope so, Ike. They really looks like and except they are so chubby and have a more feathers in the front of their body. I hope I'm not mistaken.
All the best and have a great evening,

an original and intriguing view, well adjusted in a vertical frame. The façade of this antique church is so attractive and looks imposing, despite it's being squeezed between the modern buildings. The people who live there must enjoy wonderful views to the church from their windows. A very sharp picture with agreeable subdued colours. The foliage at the top is a fine frame and provides lovely colour, luminosity and contrast. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

My favorite activity...just wandering around, and as we see here...it pays off well! What a super contrast of architecture and style, and you've done a great job bringing them together in harmony. The smooth, straight edges of the apartments set against the stylings of the textured cathedral is a study in ages. The pop of bright green from the tree leaves framing the top of the composition adds just enough color to compliment to more abundant neutral tones. Glad you found this little surprise. :) Enjoy the day ahead. Take care.

I can tell the church is in the residential area. In Europe, land is so precious. Every square meter counts. We still can see the fine architecture details of this famous church. It's magnificent.

Like the creative, natural, modern frame you create to present this side of the church
Also well seen the contrast moder , old architecture
Smart vegetation frame

A very original and surprising composition of this fantastic tower here appears above the modern buildings, which is set as a curious hire of difeentes styles, the branches of the trees on top are a nice addition.
Great colorful natural.
A bright image with optimum clarity.
Enjoy a good weekend.

eldancer1 (24783) 2014-02-22 7:18
Tight squeeze but actually it is a good composition and comparison of old and new architectures, sometimes you have to do what needs to be done. I like your pov and it has good details. Well done, tfs.

Intéressante vue de l'église entre les bâtiments moderne, j'aime le feuillages sur le haut et la lumière sur l'église
williamcoombs1 (363) 2014-02-25 7:11
This is such a success - the contrasting architectural styles work so well against each other, and the foliage and sky produce delicate colour contrasts to the buildings. Thank you for this imaginative shot in a great city.
fritzi007 (2451) 2014-05-07 13:56
