Photographer’s Note

To complete my short series I show you a masterpiece of the famous Rhine-Romanesque, the St Apostels Church of Cologne.

The first (small) church under this name was mentioned already in 965. Then around 1020 Archbishop Elector Pilgrim founded a cloister here. First the three naves of the basilica were built then in the same century a huge tower. About a hundred years later a triple-apse extension of the Ottonian building made the church complete (if this word is appropriate in case of always vivid, always changing churches). The present building is therefore largely of the 12th century and possesses a fine example of the 'tripartite' choir, that is the chancel terminates in three semi-circular apses, facing north and south in addition to the usual eastern apse.

The church suffered heavy damage in World War II, when bombs took several large bites out of the building, expertly restored between 1948 and 1975.
