Displaced and blemished city gate Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is a part of the medieval city's fortifications of Bonn, the Sterntor, one of the city gates. It was built in 1244 - and that some metres away from the today's position...

In 1898 this last remained fortified gate of Bonn was pulled down in order to improve traffic conditions in the inner city - in spite of imperial intervention by Wilhelm II - nearly a lèse-majesty!
Not before the year 1900 the Sterntor was rebuilt - some meters away from the new street . It wasn't rebuilt originally, but using the medieval building materials, quasi a "substitute citygate" and moreover - making a bow before the then historism.

It's interesting to see the old Sterntor before its demolition. I think there’s not much similarity to the medieval building ...

This gate looks a bit out of place here, but very interesting to see that old photo you´ve linked. I wonder what this place will look like in another 100 years... A good note!

Interessante Ansicht...mir gefällt die neue Version fast besser, obwohl sie ein Kind des Historismus ist. Schade ist natürlich, dass bis auf die Gebäude rechts (die ja anscheinend vor nicht all zu langer Zeit einen neuen Anstrich erhalten haben), die Architektur ein wenig dürftig ist. Das Gelb des Rheinischen Hofes ist wirklich gut herausgekommen.

It seems that history is great until it gets in the way of traffic. We have some of the same issues in this country as well. At least they rebuilt the city gate in a new place. The angle of the shot is great giving the photo a nice sense of depth. The lighting and colors are fine with nice sharpness and detail.

Hallo Frank,

a beautiful fortification being part of Bonn. I like the framing because you not only see the castle but also some way of living with people relaxing on a terrace and people coming with the bike due probably to the good weather.

Puique tu fais des panoramiques à un étage, tu pourrais faire un stitch à deux étages pour avoir un peu plus d'avant-plan.
Mais le point de vue est bien choisi pour mettre en évidence cette ancienne porte.

Hallo Frank,
schon irgendwie brutal, wie mit den alten Schätzen umgegangen wurde, heute schätzt man das vielleicht mehr und man ist um eine echte Rekonstruktion bemüht. Das was Napoleon nicht plattgemacht hat, schaffte dann die Stadtverwaltung :)

Bonjour Frank,
un cadrage assez difficile, je me doute que tu n'as pa su prendre aseez de recul. Il aurait fallu trois photos verticales à assembler et ensuite cropper pour tout avoir peut-être même en format carré.

Well, it looks quite different for sure!
I saw something like that in Goettingen - suddenly old city Mauer appears right on the crossings of the streets and tower also. Seems that there it was genuine one.
Anyway, this gates on the photo looks nice and adds feels of history to the place.

C'est une histoire intéressante que vous nous racontez là ! Je pense que, moi aussi,
j'aurais préféré la construction originale . Quoiqu'il en soit c'est une belle image qui est proposée ici , même si je partage l'avis et les propositions de Danyy et Didi.

The conditions of light were perhaps not ideal, especially for the shades in the low.
But the shot is well framed on the top, and the exposure correct.

oh, ich hätte nich gedacht, dass die ursprüngliche Bausubstanz in der Euphorie des Historismus so brutal verformt wurde. (Obwohl Beispiele dafür sind reichlich vorhanden, auch in Ungarn.) Irreführend ist es bei solchen Umbauten, dass das Resultat meistens als glaubhaft erscheint - nur die Wahrheit ist vorbei. Für uns sind sie sowieso Denkmäler der Geschichte, aber nicht die des Mittelalters, sondern des 19-ten Jahrhunderts, als man die ganze Welt neuaufbauen wollte - seien wir ehrlich: vorwiegend mit bemerkenswerten Leistungen.
Ich gratuliere Dir zum Foto und bedanke mich für die Informationen (Kommentar plus Bild).

Interesting that city planners had begun there vandalism over a centuary ago (well I guess they've being doing it for millenia come to think of it) but encouraging to think that in parts of the world we wouldn't do that any more.
