Photographer’s Note

This is a part of the medieval city's fortifications of Bonn, the Sterntor, one of the city gates. It was built in 1244 - and that some metres away from the today's position...

In 1898 this last remained fortified gate of Bonn was pulled down in order to improve traffic conditions in the inner city - in spite of imperial intervention by Wilhelm II - nearly a lèse-majesty!
Not before the year 1900 the Sterntor was rebuilt - some meters away from the new street . It wasn't rebuilt originally, but using the medieval building materials, quasi a "substitute citygate" and moreover - making a bow before the then historism.

It's interesting to see the old Sterntor before its demolition. I think there’s not much similarity to the medieval building ...
